Quiner Corner
The Quiners — Elliana, Caroline, Rachel, Savannah, Michelle and Jillian are a family that dances! Living in Long Valley, New Jersey, (and now Texas, too!) their love for dance and each other is apparent, and with all six sisters dancing (plus choreographing and teaching!) in every direction – and succeeding at every level – you’d think there just might be a little bit of ego and a little bit of competition—but you’d be wrong. They’re completely grounded, supportive of each other—and very fun-loving—just check out their social media!
In this special edition, Christy Sandmaier asked Michelle about creating her very first professional work—a world premiere for American Repertory Ballet, called At the Heart of it. (And by the way, there was another world premiere on the same program by none other than Artist in Residence Ethan Stiefel). What made the experience even more special, was having Rachel onstage dancing.
MICHELLE:
Now that you’ve had a little time to reflect, how do you think you grew as a choreographer, dancer, and person throughout the process of creating At The Heart Of It?
I really dove deeper into discovering my style and voice as both a choreographer and as a dancer. I learned how to connect a story, movement, and music together to create an experience that was relatable and moving for both the dancers and the audience. With the dancers, I believe we created something really special and powerful, and watching them give so much of themselves to the work every day was so touching and inspiring to watch.
How did you choose the piece’s themes: resilience, persistence, guidance, and presence?
I wanted to focus on different qualities for each movement that make women strong. While there are so many different qualities, I felt like these four really matched the four different pieces of music I chose.
What was it like having a world premiere alongside choreography by Ethan Stiefel and George Balanchine?!
It honestly didn’t feel real! What an honor it was to have my own choreography in the same show as two icons!
Are you ready to do it again?
I would love any opportunity to choreograph again! It was such a wonderful experience and one I will cherish forever.

RACHEL:
What was it like working with Michelle during such a life-changing moment for her?
It actually took me back to when I was younger and Michelle was my contemporary teacher. Her movement is so familiar to my body so working together in the studio felt natural. I’m so proud of how she handled being at the front of the room and the respect definitely went both ways.
How did you personally bring the piece to life?
For me, it was all about the intention. Each movement had a different quality and story, so expressing that through my movement was super important. Michelle is very musical, so I tried to listen to what she was hearing and accent the moments that were strong to her.
What emotions did you channel during the piece and how did they evolve?
Honestly, on stage I felt a lot of emotions. There were moments of grit and determination but also moments of love and tears. After opening night, when Michelle took her bow, I had an overwhelming sense of pride and admiration. She poured her heart into the piece and I think everyone in the audience felt that.
