International Dance Day 2020, A Different Look with an Even Stronger Message
By Christy Sandmaier
For dancers all over the world, the April 29 International Dance Day celebration, which made its debut in 1982, has become a rich tradition and an amazing opportunity to share the spotlight on stage across an incredible world canvas. This year, it will look a little different.
We all know dance is a universal language and we feel it every day in our blood, sweat and tears. Sharing our love for the art on International Dance Day shines a light across all nations and cultures, bringing us together under a common theme. It’s a chance to embrace our diversity, teach, learn, grow and celebrate what makes us authentic as dancers and as people.
As our world changes, we adjust to our new normal, and prepare for our literal next steps on and off the stage, it is more important than ever to hold the celebration in whatever way we can in order to ensure the tradition not only continues but reaches a brand new audience, and inspires a new awareness and appreciation for dance and the dancers who make it so special. And while we cannot be together in person this year for joyful performances, world premieres, dance-offs and choreography challenges, or a child’s very first class, we can create and share unique virtual experiences across the globe. Experiences that will build a stronger future for generations of dancers of all ages from the largest world stage to the smallest studio.
Inside Dance is featuring the incomparable Kristin McQuaid on April 29 on our Instagram and celebrating all of our incredible cover stars from Travis Wall to Debbie Allen to Jojo Gomez, together with all of the unique storylines that have shaped our lives. Each have their own unique story in the dance world and journey as performers. With that in mind, we’ll share links with you here and on our social media showcasing dancers and our partners around the world celebrating dance in these very unique times. Be Safe! Shine On! And we’ll see you next year!
Red Bull is hosting a live master class with world-renowned choreographer and a member of Kinjaz, Mike Song exclusively on Instagram @RedBullDance. Class starts on Wednesday, April 29th, 10PM CEST. #internationaldanceday
