Come Dance With Me | Interview with Tricia Miranda and Dexter Mayfield
By Kristyn Burtt
Come Dance With Me is ready to change the landscape of dance competition shows by taking young, trained dancers and pairing them with their untrained parents for a $100,000 prize. It’s a premise that might sound like it wouldn’t work on paper, but judges Tricia Miranda and Dexter Mayfield (along with third judge Jenna Dewan) are here to tell you it’s an experience they will never forget.
The dynamic duo sat down with Inside Dance for an exclusive interview to talk about “the roller coaster of emotions” they went through watching the families grow closer as the competition went on. “We were affected emotionally on so many different levels during the show — seeing the growth of the dancers, seeing the growth of the parents, and then seeing the bond that these families have together,” Miranda explained. “I mean, the roller coaster of emotions in this entire show is crazy.”

For Dexter, he thought he would come into the series as the “nice” judge, but it shocked him to see how his critique style developed over the weeks as the competition heated up. “This is the first time people are physically hearing my voice in a number of different situations, so I was like, ‘I’m going to be the nice one, I’ll be the ultra-supportive one.’ The one thing that I was able to bring to the show, especially when communicating with the parents is that I’m in more of their situation than any other dancer that could be. I’ve gone through the struggles with trying to get my body and movement right, I’ve gone through the struggles of making a name and making a place for myself in this industry.” And that’s when his comments turned from a cheerleader to making sure the parents understood their potential as dancers in the series.
All of the kids came in with solid training under their belt and Miranda loved seeing their growth over season, especially as a choreographer who often works with young talent. But she does have some sound advice for junior dancers continuing into the professional stage of their careers. Miranda believes it’s important for young artists to “stay authentic to themselves” and not “strive to be social media famous.” She added, “I’m really big on being a good human first and being the dancer that everyone wants to have around — the problem solver, the team player, the one who gets it done, picks up choreography and retains it.”

The Come Dance With Me experience wasn’t just about guiding dancers and their parents along their journey, though, the judges walked away with their own life-changing moments. “I learned that I have value when it comes to a dance career because it hasn’t been easy for me to really make my way through this industry” Mayfield shared. “The main thing that I took away from this show is how much value we all have.”
Come Dance With Me is available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+ on Fridays at 8 p.m. ET
