Come Dance With Me | Interview with Jenna Dewan
By Kristyn Burtt
It’s been over a decade since CBS broadcast their last dance competition series, Paula Abdul’s Live to Dance. Now, they are finally back in the game with a new series debuting Friday, April 15 called Come Dance With Me with Jenna Dewan as the lead judge.
This exciting show is all about families with untrained moms and dads competing with their young dancers for a $100,000 grand prize. The teams of two are judged on technique, team chemistry and showmanship as they learn routines in different styles created by well-known choreographers like So You Think You Can Dance‘s Robert Roldan and former Dancing With the Stars troupe member Brittany Cherry.

For Dewan, it didn’t take her long to decide to sign on for the show, calling it “a dream come true” because of the “bonding experience” she witnessed on the stage between parents and their kids through the love of dance. “I relate so much to these [dance] shows because I was this diehard dancer who was living this life and didn’t have these shows, [or] these opportunities at the time,” she said at the CBS Spring Press Day recently. “You get to go and perform with one of your parents, which is naturally a very bonding experience, and then you’re really highlighting dance in ways that we’ve never seen and all different styles of dance.”
Even though the moms and dads didn’t have dance experience, the choreographers didn’t go easy on them. “We put them through the paces. There’s jazz. There’s hip-hop. There’s ballroom. There’s every single style you can think of, with the most incredible choreographers that I was truly blown away by what they accomplish on the show,” she praised the teams. “The performance level that we have is so incredible and that is one of my favorite parts about doing the show, for sure.”

Dewan admits that she had a very “protective feeling” as a mother to the kids competing with their parents but revealed that it was “difficult at times” to judge the teams because they put so much effort into performing. “We have to be honest with what we’re seeing,” the former World of Dance host explained. “But our hearts are in it. So, that was a fun and unique challenge we had as judges on this show.
The show filmed last spring in Melbourne, Australia, and Dewan was fortunate to bring both of her children with her while she was working. Her eight-year-old daughter, Everly, from her marriage to Channing Tatum, gave her mom the thumbs up on Come Dance With Me. Calling Everly “a lovable critic,” Dewan shared that “this is her favorite show that she’s ever watched me film.”
Dewan is also dancing at some point during the series, but she didn’t want to spoil the surprise. “I won’t spoil it, but it’s really personal to me and a beautiful, special moment that I’m thrilled to share with the world,” she teased. Maybe a mother-daughter dance is in the cards?
Come Dance With Me premieres on Friday, April 15 on CBS.
