More Than A Singular Sensation – Our Global Passport Series continues with Spain! Here’s a snapshot:

Friends Forever with an Enduring Legacy

On a sunny Monday afternoon in Madrid last year, Banderas and legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber shocked the theatre world with an announcement that they were teaming up to form the production company ‘Amigos Para Siempre,’ which translates to Friends Forever. The endeavor aims “to produce Spanish language theatre, musicals and live entertainment shows, including some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s best-loved works, for major Spanish-speaking markets.”

Though this segment is experiencing incredible growth, it’s also considered perhaps the most underserved around the world. 21 countries count Spanish as one of their official languages, with nearly 600 million native speakers. Banderas and Webber are embarking on a mission to bring some of the most iconic productions to life, in Spanish, across the globe. The organization notes that it will retain “first-class stage rights to Spanish language versions of Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical hits including The Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard, Starlight Express, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cinderella, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and School of Rock.”

“To have the opportunity to work with one of the most respected and admired composers of all times, offering his amazing works for Spanish speaking audiences, is one of the highlights of my career in show business,” Banderas said as the production company was launched. “It wouldn’t be wrong to say that I became an actor because of the enormous influence and strong impact that I felt watching Andrew’s musicals.”

And the admiration among these theatrical icons is mutual. “Not only is Antonio Banderas entertainment royalty, he is also one of the most versatile, creative minds I have ever had the pleasure of working with,” Webber effused. “It is truly exciting to partner with Antonio to bring my work, as well as other brilliant Broadway and West End titles, to new markets. While millions of people in the Spanish-speaking world already love our shows and music, the appetite for more, and the level of musical and theatrical talent, is extraordinary. I can’t wait to work with Antonio to bring the very highest-quality Spanish language productions to the world.”
