Jim Nowakowski Front & Center!
Jim Nowakowski grew up loving dance from an early age when his parents enrolled him in dance with his older sister at age two and a half. He later began competing and earned a scholarship to an intensive at the Timothy M. Draper Center for Dance Education in Rochester, New York, which would ultimately become his ballet school and second home. He thrived on the structure, the discipline and the excitement he found in training and performing live. It set him on a trajectory not for the faint of heart, but one that was exactly what he wanted. “At the end of the day, it just opened up my eyes to this whole new world again,” he said of the experience at the Draper Center.
“I had really great mentors that were always pushing me, and they had goals for me. The start of my time at my ballet school was a lot for me to absorb. When I was 12 years-old, and I’d had a year and a half of strong ballet training, I went to the Youth America Grand Prix competition, and I won the top prize, the Junior Grand Prix prize. I think both of my teachers were just really proud of me. That was a moment where I really was like, ‘oh, this is something that I can really do for a living.’ I just had these goals and these things that were given to me that I was succeeding at. That just made me more inspired to just keep pushing, and because I loved it so much too, I just always wanted to be in the studio, training.”
