Breaking History!
Celebrating the 2024 Olympic Games
Held right in the heart of Paris at the Parc Urbain in the Place de la Concorde, Breaking made its historic debut in the City of Light at the 2024 Olympic Games.
A dream in the making for so many who brought and saw this dream to fruition, it was so exciting to see Breaking hit the stage at the Games, showcasing dance on a global level and bringing light to an artform with deep cultural roots.
Taking it back, Breaking was created by African-American and Latino youths in the Bronx borough of New York City in the 1970s when hip-hop culture was coming to life.n Paris, the B-boys and B-girls proved to the world what we’ve known forever – that dancers are supreme athletes, and that art and sport can coexist gracefully.
The battles were hard fought, and Breaking gained a mainstream audience, and a new generation of dancers, with the power to propel the sport even further. In total, 33 athletes from 16 nations proudly represented the inaugural group Breakers at the Olympics including Team USA who sent two B-boys, Jeffrey “Jeffro” Louis and Victor Montalvo and two B-girls, Sunny Choi and Logan “Logistx” Edra.
Our 2024 Olympic Commemorative Issue of Inside Dance features all of the history and momentum Breaking brought to the Olympic arena for the first time ever at the Paris Olympic Games! We revisit the magic, the impact, the results and the stunning images that captured our hearts. Breaking’s debut was monumental for the sport, the art, the athletes who can now forever add ‘Olympian’ to their accolades, and for the industry itself that will continue to inspire new generations and dreams.
